Khajuraho Temple in Madhya Pradesh



Ethereal, enticing and enchanting, Khajuraho instantly flashes erotic images of sculptures involved in the most fascinating aspect of life - Love Making. These sculptures depicts the society that celebrates life and was not ashamed of sex. Located in Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho temples are the most captivating sight of India and spans over an area of 21 sq km. The magical appeal of these extraordinary temples have brought the small village, Khajuraho on a world platform. Built in 10th -11th century, these temples represented the architectural style of Chandella rulers.

Facing the invaders and the ravages of erosion, Khajuraho temple still stands tall. Significantly, out of 85 only 25 temple are left showcasing the forlorn grandeur of the magnificent past.

Apart from the sensuous sculptures, the other temples features friezes of intricately detailed aspects of life. But some how these images have never attracted tourist. The travellers are majorly fascinated by the sculptures involved in sex as they put these temples on the tourist map. The sculptures, apparently poised in movement are warm, graceful, languid, and sensuous, redolent of feeling of unity with nature and sense of well being.

With in the complex the temples are divided into three groups - Western, Eastern and Southern, with the western group being accredited as the World Heritage Site. The Western group is certainly the best known, because it is to this group that the largest and most typical Khajuraho temple. They offer many opportunities for you to capture the scenic beauty of the temple into your cameras....

Apart from the exotic temples, you have Archeological museum and Shilpgram to visit. The Archeological museum showcases sculptures and stone panels of ruined temples in the Jain, Buddhist and other galleries. There is a huge statue of Buddha and an unusual statue of a dancing Ganesha.And then offcourse the sound and light show will enchant your evenings. Definitely the best place to visit in your holidays...................

During the month of February, the small village rejoice with fun and frolic as it celebrates the Khajuraho Dance Festival . The Dance festival showcases all forms of classical dance. With the international status under the Government of India Programme categories, this seven-day extravaganza is a unique treat for connoisseurs from all over the world.

Getting There
Air There are regular flights linking Khajuraho with Delhi (35 minutes), Agra(40 minutes), and Varanasi(45 minutes).
Rail There is no direct train to Khajuraho. The most convenient station is Jhansi(175km), which is linked to Delhi and other major northern cities. Satna(117km) is another convenient railway head for those coming from Mumbai, Calcutta and Varanasi.
Road Khajuraho is connected by regular buses with Satna, Harpalpur(94km), Jhansi and Mahoba(61km).
