Indian art and craft are the integral part of its culture and heritage. Amazing art and craft of India are much owed to diverse religion, lifestyle, tradition, ritual and geographic conditions. History of Indian art is as old as its civilization and till continuing with bewitching splendor. Despite of numerous invasions, India still remain an unbroken civilization with a rich tradition that endorse an equally rich artistic culture.

Over the centuries number of techniques have been using and experimenting to polish the already shined artistic brilliances. Indian art comprise of every size and shape, from paintings to metals amulets, craft and has a wide range of creations. Indian art has taken much of its inspiration from nature. Indian art form is desired and handed over from generation to generation. The art is expressed through many things such as architecture, sculptures, paintings, metalwork and textiles.

History of Indian craft and art flourished from the Indus valley civilization. Terra-cotta figurines of nude figures, earthenware, pottery and numerous square seals of ivory. Later on periods, the art and craft in Rajput and Mughals era were make a strong impression. Temple structures in India bore witness of marvelous creation of ancient rulers. Mostly produced in stone, clay, copper, and gold in many Hindu, Jain as well as Buddhist temples. One can be amazed to see the wall paintings of Ajanta and Ellora caves or mystified by the beautiful carved sculptures in Khajuraho. Paintings in Jogimura cave in Orissa and of course one shouldn't overlook the grandeur of Rajputs and Mughal paintings.

Indian craft is mainly hiding in the rural arena. Traditional art form of tribes in various part of India is equally impressive and has a high demand in world market. State of Orissa is a home of several tribes and they have their ethnic craft that is enchanting and close to nature. The various art form like weaving of handloom, saris, basket, stone carving, painting and metal work are sought after in global market. Woodwork is also a popular among foreign travelers. Wide range of carved furniture at Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, walnut woodwork in Kashmir and miniature redolent sandalwood artifacts of Karnataka speak the artistic grandness. Every region developing its own genre and style. Perhaps it is impossible a place to find in India where creativity in any form is not present. Down to remote villages in south structures made up of coconut shell are splendid whereas bamboo work is famous in north east. Metalwork shines bright in inlaid and moulded brass, bronze and silver artifacts. Bengal is famous for annular dhokras that are one of artifacts wax process of metal casting by traditionally nomadic adivasi tribe spread from one state to other. This charming folk motif have earned lots of praise from world wide.

The Patola weaving of Patan in Gujarat is renowned for its colorful geometric pattern that lure any onlooker. Another traditional thing found in Gujarat is Jari, one of the oldest industries since from Mughal period. Embroidery is with real gold and silver threads. The tattoos that are finesse of body art is famous in Rajasthan. Tattoos on the body of Rajesthani men and women tell the story of imbued culture and heritage. It is considered one of the famous art form in India.
