Set between the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges, this deciduous forest was once the hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur. In 1980, it was declared as a national park and has also been included in the Project Tiger.The entire park is not open to the public- its core area being only 392 sqkms. Its rugged terrain is marked by rocky ridges, hills, and open
valleys with lakes and pools.

Park Inhabitants:
The focus of attraction revolves around the tigers. However, one can easily spot the other inmates- antelopes, chital, nilgai and sambhar.Other occupants of the park like sloth bear, wild boars, chinkara, marsh crocodile, jungle cats and leopards remain obscured and only a lucky tourist will have the chance of having a glance at these elusive creatures. Besides these, Ranthambore is also home to chinkaras and porcupines, Indian hare, mongoose and about 264 varieties of birds.
The best places to see these animals are the lakes and water holes inside the park.

Exploring the Park:
The park can be toured on jeeps and lorries.Reservations for these trips can be availed at the Project Tiger office at Sawai Madhopur.Seperate fees are charged for entry into the park, vehicle hired,cameras and the tourist guide who accompanies the visitors during the trip.

Getting There:
The nearest city from the park is Sawai Madhopur, situated at a distance of 11 kms from Ranthambore. It is also the nearest railhead for the park. Jaipur, 145 kms away, is the nearest air-port from where one can take the roadway.

The hotels and rest houses maintained by RTDC, various heritage hotels provide excellent
accomodation for the travellers.The Maharaja Lodge of the Taj Group provides world class accomodation to the visitors. A few local and private accomaodation is also available.

Buzzing around Ranthambore:
The Ranthambore Fort built by the Chauhans in the 10th century is the most fascinating place of excursion near Ranthambore.It was the most coveted fort of various rulers because of its strategic location between north and central India. This fort is famous for the Johar by the Rajput women-folk during the seige by Ala-ud-din Khilji in 1301 A.D.sS
