Ganga - Ganga is the most sacred river and an indispensable part of Indian culture. It was believed earlier that Ganga came from the mythical mountain Meru, which was the abode of gods and located at the core of the universe. Ganga originates in the Himalayas at Gaumukh about 13,858 ft then it drops into Lord Shiva’s tangled locks and finally lands on earth. Ganga is the largest river river in India and almost run through all the state. For Indians Ganga is not only a river but a essay of spiritualism well incorporated with religions, economy, cultural and social aspects that live everyday with the people. A river with a high spiritual significance for the Hindus where it is believed that a dip in the Ganga to shrive one of all sins. Even a drop of water from this holy river on a dying lips to earn an abode in heaven. Mystical beliefs enshrouded in Hindus mind, ashes of dead immerse in the river with a belief that soul break free from the circle of death and birth and attain nirvana. Ganga having a celestial origin and labyrinth course invite tons of pilgrims all over the world to end the permanent melancholy. All of holy Hindu pilgrimage resides on the bank of Ganga such as Varanasi, Allahabad and Haridwar.
Yamuna - Second most important river also having a cultural significance is the Yamuna. Originated from the Yamunotri in the Himalayas, it is a tributary of the Ganga. Yamuna is believed to be more pious than Ganga as here that Lord Krishna used to play and swim. It is common notion that to bath in Yamuna to sway away all the sins and achieve liberation. Yamuna almost touches most of north Indian states, some of the important places it flows through are Delhi, Agra, Mathura, Brindaban.
Narmada - A river with a elegant feminine movements have a strong impact on the culture of India. Originated from the mountain series of ‘Maikal’ in Madhya Pradesh by the order of Lord Shiva, it is believed that it descended from the sky. Each pebble and stone found on the bed of Narmada is believed sacred. It rises on the summit of Amarkantak Hill in the Madhya Pradesh and flows through the ranges of Satpura and direct westerly course to the Gulf of Khambhat. It passing through Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Some holy places that spotted the banks of Narmada. Places like Omkareswar and Maheshwar are the sought after pilgrimage places.
Sangam - Sangam is not a river but a holy cauldron where the holiest rivers in Hindu Mythology – Ganga, Yamuna and Mythical Saraswati converge. It is a beautiful scenery to see the merging of Ganga and the Yamuna at Sangam. Allahabad has a special significance as it is believed that here Sangam water has miraculous effect of cleansing power. Also invisible Saraswati river add more sanctity to its water. Water of Sangam is so precious because of the belief that few drops of ‘amrit’( divine nectar) made it truly spiritual and dip during famous Kumbh Mela is believed to cleanse and purify the soul. During the month of January to mid February another famous mela(fair) is organized on the bank of Sangam known as Magh Mela where thousands of devotees come from various part of the world to take a bath to gain salvation.
