Unfurl the Gandhian Thoughts at Sabarmati Ashram

Mahatma Gandhi needs no introduction, a world famous socialist or shall we say an ascetic, who contributed his life fighting to create a world that lives in tranquillity. Peace was his agenda. Though he failed to create a world like that but he successfully formed a niche for himself in Porbandar that represented his thoughts on the miraculous landscape of Gujarat. The Sabarmati ashram reflects his mind and thoughts on the world canvass. Set up in 1915, the Ashram was also a perfect example of a model community based on rules and values.

Situated 5 kms from Ahemdabad, the ashram is encompassed under shady trees populated by thousands parakeets, beaters, sunbirds and squirrels. This ashram was Gandhi's headquarters during the long struggle for Indian independence.

You have many choices within the ashram to satify your eye for exploration. The first one off course is the museum that might just fascinate your innate desire to explore the era of independence and life of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum itself is divided into office, library, two photo galleries and an auditorium. The museum has eight life-size colour oil paintings and an exhibition on Gandhiji’s life “My life is my message” and “Gandhiji in Ahmedabad ."

An archive set up for the legendary hero, which stores 34,066 letters written by Gandhiji, manuscripts of his 8,633 articles, negatives of 6,367 photographs, 134 reels of microfilms of his writings and 210 films on Gandhiji and the freedom struggle.

The library showcases more than 30,000 books, 155 letters of felicitation received by Gandhiji besides miscellaneous memorabilia comprising coins, postal stamps and the like.

The second attraction is the sound and light show, for a minimal fee in Gujarati at 6.30 PM and in English at 8.30 PM on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On other days the show is in Hindi .
